All you need to know about our high quality, bespoke Music Curriculum

Curriculum Vision & Pedagogy

At The Coombes CE Primary School, our music curriculum is delivered through Kapow Primary and offers an enriching and engaging experience for all pupils. Through a variety of interactive and creative lessons, children explore musical elements such as rhythm, pitch, and dynamics, while developing key skills in listening, performing, and composing. The Kapow curriculum supports progression across all year groups and encourages every child to express themselves through music. Pupils also enjoy opportunities to participate in singing assemblies, performances, and extra-curricular activities, nurturing their confidence and a lifelong love of music.

The philosophy of music education is based on the principle that it should be fun and engaging for all concerned, and that every child is a born musician. Music plays a role in every aspect of our lives, wherever and whoever we are.

Curriculum Overview- Music

All activities are based around a song.

  1. Games embed the Interrelated Dimensions of Music through repetition
  2. Singing is at the heart of all the musical learning
  3. Playing instruments with the song to be learnt - tuned/un-tuned classroom percussion and an option to play any band instrument. A sound-before-symbol approach is used but scores are provided as an understanding of notation is introduced to the children
  4. Improvising with the song using voices and instruments occurs in some Units of Work
  5. Composing with the song using instruments occurs in some Units of Work

The musical progression through KS1 and KS2 is demonstrated in the document below. The instrumental work is differentiated allowing children to move through the relevant parts as they need to. Remember that an integrated approach to musical learning means that the whole musical experience is important, children are learning music through these activities.

ADDITIONAL MUSICAL OPPORTUNITIES FOR CHILDREN IN KEY STAGE TWO

At The Coombes, we believe in nurturing every child's creativity and confidence through music. From Key Stage Two, pupils can take part in a variety of enriching musical experiences.

Our school choir is open to all KS2 children and offers regular opportunities to perform at school events and community celebrations. We are also proud participants in WASMA (Wokingham Area Schools Music Association), where selected pupils join a large-scale choir with other local schools to perform in a professional concert setting. In addition, we offer peripatetic music lessons with visiting specialist teachers, providing individual or small group tuition in instruments such as piano, guitar, violin, and more. These opportunities encourage musical growth and a lifelong love of music.
