Dear Parents and Carers,

Firstly, thank you to all of you who have worked in partnership with us to value good attendance and punctuality for your children this year – in the best interests of children and school alike.

As you know, legislation related to leave of absence in term time changed in September 2013 and we no longer have the option to grant elective absence for children unless there are exceptional circumstances. Ordinary family holidays do not fall into this category.

Where parents have known in advance about the new legislation and the consequences of taking unauthorised leave, we are required to refer* unauthorised holidays of 5 or more days in any one academic year to Education Welfare Service.  EWS has the right to issue a Penalty Notice (fine), without further warning, of £60 / child / parent (rising to £120 / child / parent if not paid within 21 days of issue).
*Referral applies to Key Stage 1 and 2 pupils (Years 1 to 6 inclusive).

Please be aware of the above when submitting any future requests for leave of absence for your children. We very much hope you will choose to take family holidays during the 13 weeks school holidays and that no such referrals will take place.

We hope that this makes the situation clear and that, as a school, we have no option but to follow, and implement, the Government’s requirements regarding attendance at school.   Please feel free to contact us if you need any further clarification or would like to discuss this in more detail.

Thank you for your support.

Yours sincerely,

Neil Lyddiatt
Acting Headteacher
