Music

 by Gill Daniel (Subject Leader)

Music is an integral part of the school and supports learning in all areas of the curriculum. All children are given the opportunity to become musicians and many of them choose to participate in a range of music ensembles and choirs.

Throughout the school music is taught in mixed ability age groups. Foundation 2 and key stage 1 pupils are taught by our music specialist. Work covers singing, percussion, composition, music and movement, stick work and country dancing. Key stage 2 pupils work with class teachers and cover singing, percussion, composition and music evaluation. Year 4 pupils are privileged to work with Berkshire Maestros through the “Wider opportunities scheme” and learn to play an orchestral instrument.

Singing is an important part of our daily hall times and children are given the chance to perform individually or as part of a bigger group to the rest of the school to help develop their confidence.  Weekly singing rehearsals take place to learn new songs and build up a repertoire that will be used throughout the school year. Parents and Grandparents are invited to join our end of week sing-along.

Music is an important element within all our exciting “Theme days “. As well as pupils working individually and in groups, this is an opportunity to bring the whole school together to share music.  We also invite a range of musicians and dancers to perform and lead workshops with the children. In recent years we have welcomed Morris dancers, Irish musicians and dancers, Scottish pipes, REME quartet, hand-bells  to name a few. We are lucky to have such a talented staff and parent group who are willing to share their musical skills throughout the year.

We strongly believe that children should be given the opportunity to share their musical skills at different events both in and outside school.

  • Foundation 2 and key stage 1 pupils perform concerts at Christmas and at the end of the year which includes singing, percussion and large recorder ensemble. Key stage 2 pupils perform a Carole service and year 6 leavers’ service at our local church. Year 6 pupils always round off the year with a musical production. The last three have been plays based on works by William Shakespeare.
  • Our school choirs have been invited to perform at a range of outside venues. This past year they have sung at two local garden centres, Wokingham May Fair celebrations, REME Officers Ball, lighting of the village Christmas tree and also sang and danced at Arborfield Village Fete.
  • We embrace the fact that our choir is able to perform with other local schools. We sang at the Wokingham Schools Carol service,  the Hexagon Theatre and later this year will be singing in The Royal Albert Hall.
