Art and Design

Art and Design is central to much of the work carried out at our school.  We are dedicated to giving the children creative opportunities to be responsible for their own learning, not only through discrete teaching of Art and Design, but through the wider curriculum.

We engender an approach that encourages the children to be resilient, self – reliant, disciplined and responsible through Art teaching that encompasses a variety of subject areas including skills, creative thinking and use of materials and medium based practice as well as specific teaching around curriculum areas e.g. Britain since 1930, Maps, Egyptians, Tudors, Local Environment and study of particular artists. We explore the roles of artists, crafts people and designers through different time periods.

Coombes Days –

In reference to our Mission Statement ‘We foster Spiritual, Intellectual, Physical, Artistic, Musical, Social, Emotional and Moral development of children and adults in our school.’  This is particularly important as engagement in art is a fundamental aspect of our whole school activities.   All children, staff, adults, visitors and members of the Coombes family are invited to contribute and involve themselves in creative and expressive learning, including visits from current working artists and artists - in -residence.

Large scale display and installations enhance our appreciation of the environment as well as the skills of the artist. They also encourage us to bring the outside inside and explore art and design in a variety of ways using other senses, not just our eyes! Seasonal production of badges for the school community encourages appreciation of the talents, generosity, skills and time taken in designing and creating a piece of art. Seasonal celebrations and themed days inspire and motivate. Some of the creative days are a regular occurrence in our school calendar and others may be a one-off!

Examples of these are:-

Rock work inspired by Christo, Chess Day, the Olympic Project and Animation workshops.

Coombes Traditions
